Appalachian
Heritage, Autumn 2006 Bruce Hopkins. Bright Wings to Fly: An Appalachian Family in the Civil War. Nicholasville, KY: Wind Publications, 2006. 204 pages. Trade Paperback. $16.00. In 2003, road
construction forced the removal of a family cemetery in Pike County,
Kentucky. Continuing to excavate family stories and history well after
the bodies of his kin were re-buried, Bruce Hopkins wrote a fascinating
book, Spirits in the Field, which told of that experience and of
almost 200 years of family history uncovered. Now, he turns a more
focused eye on the Civil War and its aftermath. Hopkins's
penetrating vision and his graceful evocation have created a book which
illuminates not just one family but the whole experience of this
generation in a way that will be invaluable not just to those interested
in the Civil War, Eastern Kentucky, or in genealogy.
